• The process utilised with these types of printer cartridges to form the printed output is through the use of a laser beam to create electrostatic charging. This is known as laser printing technology.  A cylindrical photoconductor or drum is an integral part of this process. It has a photo-sensitive surface that changes electrical state when a light source is directed upon it. Initially, this coating on the drum is covered with electrostatic charges of electrons to attract oppositely opposed charged toner particles. The laser then is switched on, and it discharges all the areas on the drum where there is no image. What is left on the on the surface of the drum is an invisible highly charge area of the desired image. In the next rotation, these charges act to pull across the toner particles from the developer roller of the toner cartridge to create the primary image. Paper then enters the printer to an exacting spot below the drum, and as the paper and drum move synchronously, another reverse charge is applied to the underside of the paper. This charging effect immediately pulls the printed image from the drum down onto the paper. It then is transported to a fixing element area where the image particles are fused with heat and pressure into the fibres of the paper so that it remains permanently attached to the paper. It then is moved out of the printer onto a tray ready for further operator use. The major advantage with laser printing over others is the speed and volume such prints can be produced, so ideal for office and other work settings where medium to higher print volumes are required.
