As purse strings tighten and financial outlays become restrictive, individuals and organisations alike have started looking for a way to save money. If you’re here, then it’s likely that you’ve also recently realised that regular printing costs a mini fortune every month. To reduce printing cost, you’ve tried to digitise your work and you’ve tried back to back printing but none of those efforts have yielded the right results.
Do you know why? It’s not that people are printing gleefully with abandon when your back is turned. On the contrary, it’s because your initiatives to reduce printing cost were directed at the wrong cost element. The most expensive element of printing is not the paper but instead the ink!
Your Printer’s Ink Costs Twice As Much As Your Designer Perfume!
People say that there will come a time when the world’s currency of choice is going to be petroleum because it will become as rare as diamonds. However, these people haven’t really paid attention to the cost of printer cartridges. Printing cartridges can be obscenely expensive.
If you’ve been paying for your printing cartridges, then you should already be suspecting something like this. The cost of printing ink can vary greatly between countries in the world but what doesn’t change is that they’re exorbitant.
However, it will astound you to learn just how pricey printing ink can be. For instance, did you know that the cost of printing ink is almost twice as the cost of Chanel No. 5 perfume?
Estimates put printing ink around $4,285 per litre. A 30 ml Chanel No. 5 perfume bottle costs approximately $38. If you were to use the above price to come up with the price of 30 ml of printing ink, you’ll arrive at $75.
That’s’ almost twice as much as designer perfume! Now, do you understand why printing is costing you so much and why you need to focus of reducing ink usage to reduce printing cost? So, what’s the best way of reducing printing cost with respect to the printing ink?
The obvious solution is to stop printing altogether but that’s quite unreasonable whether your child needs to print for studies or your employees need to print to make money. The solution lies in the fonts you use.
You Can Save Money by Simply Switching Fonts
Since the cost of printing ink started going up, people all over the world started coming up with ways to reduce printing cost. In fact, Inkjet Wholesale was established because our founder couldn’t believe the astronomical costs of printing cartridges.
While Inkjet Wholesale – the discounted store for printing ink – was established here in Australia, elsewhere people were studying various ways through which printing ink use could be reduced. Multiple solutions were found too.
The best of these solutions was to ditch all conventional fonts and start using an eco-friendly font. The font which is available for download for free, these days, is called Ecofont. The logic behind Ecofont is simple enough. This font had characters with little holes in them. The idea is that since holes don’t need to be printed, they end up helping you reduce printing cost by saving you ink.
Fonts Can Help You Reduce Printing Cost
While the appearance of your copy will change if you were to use Ecofont, readability wouldn’t. Unfortunately, everyone can’t really switch to Ecofont just to reduce printing cost. Your child can’t really submit a paper to his teacher with writing that has holes in it (excuse our pun). Neither can your employees really send out letters and proposals to clients or customers with font that has holes in it.
For such use, you can’t help but use conventional fonts. However, there’re multiple options in conventional fonts too. Could it be possible that some of them are more pocket friendly than others?
It is and this was actually proven by a 14 year old kid in the US. The kid, Suvir Mirchandani, researched a paper for his school project. His subject was the study of ink usage with various fonts. His objective was to find a way through which his school can save money by just switching fonts.
Mirchandani’s findings revealed that his school can save approximately $21,000 every year just by switching fonts and reducing their ink costs. The kid was so successful that his teachers got him to publish his paper in a journal. Later on, Mirchandani even went on to do a similar study on how much money the US government can save by switching fonts.
Fonts That Can Help You Reduce Printing Cost
Most people use fonts like Times New Roman, Courier, Helvetica, Calibri, and Comic Sans. What they don’t know is that many of these fonts use a lot of ink. For instance, Comic Sans is one of the worst fonts to use if you’re trying to reduce printing cost by saving up on your ink. Consider the following information on what percentage of an A4 page is covered by printing ink with these fonts in size 12.
- Comic Sans – 5.74 percent,
- Helvetica – 5.45 percent,
- Courier – 5.40 percent,
- Calibri – 5.29 percent,
- Times New Roman – 5.14 percent, and
- Garamond – 4.47 percent.
This makes Garamond a significantly better font to use if your primary objective is to reduce printing cost. How much can you end up saving just by switching from Comic Sans to Garamond? If you were to switch from Comic Sans to Garamond, your printing ink usage will go down by more than 22 percent! This means that if you spend $1,000 every month on printing ink, then you would actually only spend $780. You’ve reduced printing cost by $220 every month!
Reduce Printing Cost Not Only On Ink Usage but Also On Other Things
You can reduce printing cost greatly by switching to Ecofont or even other, more efficient but conventional fonts. However, why should you stop there? There’re other ways through which you can reduce printing cost too.
The most basic is to use back to back printing features on your printers. If you don’t have this feature, then you should manually arrange the papers so that you get back to back prints. There’s another very effective way to reduce printing cost. This one’s most effective if you have a penchant for printing webpages.
As you know, most webpages these days carry multiple ads and banners. When you print a webpage, these banners eat up a lot of your printing ink too. The solution to this problem is fairly simple. You can simply switch to a print view before taking a printout. What this will do is remove all the ads and images on the page. The end result is that your printout only contains content and no spurious elements.
Another method to reduce printing cost is to simply reduce the amount of money you put into buying the printing cartridge in the first place. Printing ink doesn’t have to be as expensive as it’s available in the market. Our whole business model is a testimony to that fact. We offer virtually every type of printing ink at great discounts. Our discounts can go up to as high as 40 percent of the retail price, which can often mean savings of hundreds of dollars.
